Arrr!!! It be Talk Like a Pirate Day...and here is a helpful link in case yer too drunk to remember the words to all your favorite sea shanties!
Which reminds me...
A Friday night a couple of weeks ago, robertjaz and I drove down to Newport, RI to see The Fleshtones. When we got to the club however, we were met with a crude hand lettered sign saying the show had been cancelled, so we just wandered around town for a while. Since it was already pretty late, little was open, but we managed to duck into the record shop on the main drag for a bit.
And as I was flipping those little divider cards in the CD bins with artist and genre name, I saw a category card that I don't see too often.
The card was labeled...
"SEA SHANTIES"
I had to chuckle. It wasn't just a casual hand written card either, like you often see in music stores...it was a beautiful embossed card with crisp, printed letters. I liked seeing it mixed in with all the other stuff...PUNK, ROCKABILLY, JAZZ, SEA SHANTIES. OK, it was Newport and a nautical kinda town and everything, but I couldn't help but be amused. Any town that has a record store with a sea shanty section is all right by me.
